If I made a pros and cons list, the cons for using Zip for that would be much longer than pros. Kinda sad tho! At least Spiceworks is doing it right using EXEs instead of zip. And who uses IE anymore?Īnyway, I guess since NO ONE in the world except me cares about this, I'll let it drop. You're not gonna change anything by yelling about it." So for 20 years I haven't said anything. I've been downloading zipped EXE's and EXE installers for 20 years and just thot "Get over it, that's just how different companies are. Sure, I can get over it, but I can tell you right now, I've skipped over zipped installers because I thot they were stupid for doing that, making me jump thru hoops.

It just doesn't seem to matter that it's zipped or not, you still get dumb security warnings that should deter wanna-be's. Thing is, when you unzip, Windows yells at you about signed EXEs anyway, so you still get that "hey, is this legit?" question.

Most ALL installers nowadays have very good compression, and for a good reason. It's about the same with solarwinds apps. For example, I downloaded the Spiceworks 64MB EXE and zipped it with the highest compression.

My take - get over it - Windows pseudo-security nonsense prompts are an attempt to protect end-users, and inadvertently makes your job have a few extra steps.įor almost every Zipped EXE installer I download, the zip file is either larger than the EXE or only a few K smaller.

So, any legit software maker trying to distribute a file, has to deal with one of these two issues.

zip you download, almost right after download, is again downloaded by Microsoft's secret servers (more bandwidth wasted), to "check" if this file is going to install malware/badware, that's the SmartScreen filter nonsense included since IE8 if my memory serves correct. zip, and the resulting files won't run right until you unblock them.Īlso realize that any. exe/.dll/.bat files won't run right - because windows "flagged" them somehow as coming from a. zip, you can achieve better compression than some package/installers (.exe format) but then you sometimes get the problem of having to "unblock" the. This confuses some wanna-be-sys-admins and manager types, and will then lead to them abandoning otherwise perfectly good software. more hoops to jump through) before you can actually run it. exe is downloaded, there is the pseudo security nonsense of "this file is not verified" and "run anyway" nonsense button (a.k.a. Consequently, if the end-user is using IE/Windows, and a. rar, and therefore could be "wasting" bandwidth on providing a larger download. exe, the compression may not be as great as a. I'm sure there are other counter arguments, but on the whole I'd say ZIPs are the better option for downloads when compared to EXEs. Hide inside a level so deep that malware scanners won't bother to scan in.Īlso, ZIP files used to be able to exploit bugs in unZIP software, which again was great for malware to spread.Īs you said yourself, ZIP files are also bigger than EXEs, which are themselves already compressed - and ZIPping a compressed file creates a larger ZIP file. So I'd say ZIP files are better than EXE files - less likely to be blocked and makes people think before they install.Ĭounter argument of course is that ZIP files create an extra burden on malware scanners and antivirus software - and malware used to use that to their advantage by hiding inside a ZIP, inside a ZIP, inside a ZIP. It creates an extra step that might make people think about what they're doing and maybe stops them from just installing anything. Also, EXE files can be executed "immediately" after downloading from a website, making it easier for people to install the software - which is great, but is an issue if it's malware.Ī ZIP file is usually not blocked and requires people to download the ZIP, then open the ZIP, before running the EXE. I think EXE files are often blocked, because they're often used by malware.
